Using immutability for backup storage

Backup immutability enables secure storage of backups in the cloud using a write-once-read-many (WORM) model. It protects backup data from ransomware attacks, accidental deletions, or malicious tampering by ensuring that all deleted backups are retained in immutable storage for a specified period. This guarantees the integrity and availability of backup data, which is essential for reliable disaster recovery.

You can configure a retention period that ranges from days to years, based on business or compliance requirements. During this period, backups remain accessible and restorable, but cannot be modified, moved, or deleted. Once the retention period ends, backups are automatically and permanently deleted, helping to optimize storage usage

Immutable storage is available in the following modes:

  • Governance mode: Enabled by default on Acronis-hosted and Partner-hosted cloud storage. In this mode, you can enable or disable immutability, adjust the retention period, or switch to compliance mode.
  • Compliance mode: This mode is irreversible. Once enabled, you cannot disable immutability, modify the retention period, or revert to governance mode, ensuring strict regulatory compliance.
